Presentation for grades 6-8

Teachers share handout on jade facts and do additional suggested activities with students prior to our visit (optional).

  1. Students enter the library, multipurpose room, or classroom, line up to see and touch the front cover of The Jade Book, and then find a place to sit – 5 minutes.
  2. Speaker introduces herself and the sculptor and presents the slideshow – 20 minutes.
  3. Speaker tells a short story – 5 minutes.
  4. Speaker explains the additions to the exhibit – 5 minutes.
  5. Students watch a power point presentation (where equipment is available) – 5 minutes.
  6. Students ask the sculptor and the speaker questions – 10-15 minutes.
  7. Students vote on which page they’d like to see, and they watch the sculptor open The Jade Book!
  8. Teachers help distribute a postcard to each student.
  9. Students line up to see the additions to the exhibit up close, to touch The Jade Book (opened this time to reveal the carved image and words of the humanitarian they chose), and to have their postcards autographed by the sculptor and the speaker (if they wish) – 15-20 minutes.
  10. Teachers fill out evaluation forms for principal to collect as soon as possible (optional).

Teachers do suggested follow-up activities with students (optional).

Total Time: 65-75 minutes. Specific times are approximate.

Equipment: We require a screen (but not a slide projector) and a large table.

Group Size: Our ideal group size for each presentation for grades 6-8 is about four to five classes. We recommend full day visits, whenever possible, to fit all classes in.

Note: We believe it is best for all students, teachers, administrators, and staff in the school to be given opportunities to view the exhibit and see and touch The Jade Book during our visit, even if they will not be attending a presentation.
