Presentation for grades 8-12

Teachers share handout on jade facts and do additional suggested activities with students prior to our visit (optional).

  1. Students enter the library, multipurpose room, or classroom, line up to see and touch the front cover of The Jade Book, and then find a place to sit – 5 minutes.
  2. Speaker introduces herself and the sculptor and shows the video – 20 minutes.
  3. Speaker talks – 20 minutes.
  4. Speaker explains the additions to the exhibit – 5 minutes.
  5. Students watch a power point presentation (where equipment is available) – 5 minutes.
  6. Students ask the sculptor or the speaker questions – 10 minutes.
  7. Students vote on which page they’d like to see, and they watch the sculptor open The Jade Book!
  8. Teachers pick up enough postcards to distribute one to each of their students (for small groups only).
  9. Students line up to see the additions to the exhibit up close, to touch The Jade Book (opened this time to reveal the carved image and words of the humanitarian they chose), and to have their postcards autographed by the sculptor and the speaker (if they wish) – 15-20 minutes.
  10. Teachers fill out evaluation forms for principal to collect as soon as possible (optional).

Teachers do suggested follow-up activities with students (optional).

Total Time: 75-85 minutes. Specific times are approximate.

Equipment: We require a screen and video projector (for a VHS tape); for small groups a large television with a VCR may work instead. We also require a large table.

Group Size: Group size for each presentation for grades 8-12 is flexible and could range from two or three classes to the entire school. However, if we present to the entire school at once, the outline above will need to be modified and the student body will have to be divided into groups to view the exhibit at different times throughout the day. Such a plan would require a full day booking.

Note: We believe it is best for all students, teachers, administrators, and staff in the school to be given opportunities to view the exhibit and see and touch The Jade Book during our visit, even if they will not be attending a presentation.
